1998 SN GT40 engine ecm

Any one else out there having problems with the pleasure craft ecm's for the GT40 ford engine? I have replaced 3 so far in 12 years. Seem they fail consistently at 4 years. At 500 bucks a pop, it can get fairly annoying.
I would look for a short in the wiring harness as I've not heard of any. They use the same base ecm as all ford efi did from 89 though 95 and those are one of the most rock solid you'll find.

Moisture? (inseason or in storage) I can hardly believe that the sealed up tight MMDV could go bad from Moisture, But that is what even the manufacturer says is usually the cause... $500.00 a pop as well... ÂÂ
I also have a 1998 GT-40 in my SNOB and have never had a problem with the ECM. Not sure what could be causing your troubles. Fired right up last weekend and ran great after a long winter.
I've got two coworkers each w/ 1998 SN w/ GT40 (500 and 1700 hrs)...both original ECMs
Thanks guys. took one of the old bad ecms off the shelf and inspected the capacitors on the motherboard out of curiosity. Found both to be bulging. I believe the heat may have caused a hydrogen gas expansion in the capacitors. This ecm has nichicon capacitors which were known to be faulty. I have had many Ford Trucks and Mustangs with somewhat similar ecm with never a problem. Just my bad luck. However, my boat runs 3 to 6 times a day in the summers. No idea what my hours are since the hour meter went out when it was fairly new. I replaced many a capacitor on IBM computers when I worked there. Will let all know how the capacitor replacement goes.
Hey I know it’s a old forum but if your still looking for ecm’s check out gt40ecm.com
