Hi guys, for my school project im designing a ski boat water pump. If you were designing one, what would you change from what is already on the market today?
#1 request from me would be a flow sensor so you'd know if flow became obstructed and/or vane-loss caused insufficient efficiency. Run-dry would be nice too. Not that impellers are hard to change on a direct drive, but an easier swappable design, particularly for Vdrives, would be nice.
It tends to be a higher maintenance item, impeller failure is fairly common. Improving reliability, material improvement and/or serviceability would be a good focus. Have fun.
How about making the face of the RWP as you look at mounted from clear plexiglass so you can visually inspect the state of the impeller without removing it.
Easy. I would have an accessory drive shaft run the pump with no belt. The Pump would be easily accessed and "offset" from the pylon.
The cover would be a tool-less removal. The shaft that keyed the impeller into the drive behind it would have a threaded hole in the middle for a puller.
Below the pump would be a fitting, it would be a combo drain/flush port, you could open it and it would be set to drain the water from the block and head.
Closed it would be in the "run" position. But also you'd have the ability to attach a hose into a bucket of antifreeze turn the valve to purge and it would draw off the antifreeze.
