Advances nicely on the ski in the preturn and initially reaches forward and down just as Nate does...

MAN that is some effin' sweet handle control there, isn't it?

Talk more about advancing on the ski in the preturn. How does one do that and what are the benefits?

Yea, I've noticed other elite skiers doing the "reach down and then back up" type move. Andy Mapple, Greg Bedal, Nate Smith and Will Asher. They kinda do a similar action with the handle. They reach down going into the bouy and then almost immediately begin pushing it back up as they approach the bouy.

I agree with Horton, it looks like a "reach down"; but, it is actually maintaining the handle at the same level. I think this is what allows them to get so much ski in the water in the preturn (front foot pressure) which is really needed at 38 and shorter (i am not speaking from experience) so I am told....
