Ski-Doc Camera Mount review

I tried out the Ski-Doc Camera Mount yesterday for the first time. Once I found the right amount of zoom it works like a charm. I think the video speaks for itself.

Is that a back drop?? Holy cow thats one hell of a view with some amazing conditions! Oh and cool product I can't wait to give it a try.
What camera where you filming with?
  • HortonHorton Posts: 30,561 Administrator
    @MattP that is SkiWest.

I am using a Nikon CoolPix AW 100. It is the only Nikon product that I have ever owned that I not really love. It is good for video but I sort of hate it as a camera.

FYI - I listened to Sexton's album on the way home. I am not really a country fan but it is pretty good.

Great, that was torture! I just shoveled a "Horton Pot" of frozen water and come inside to watch this? Nice little camera mount and some entertainment! MS, tell me again why we live in South Canada?

@thager it was cold. Everyone is in a dry suit except me in my Camaro (I was warmer). The high was like 55. Ooo wait I forgot. That is like a summer day for you guys.

@thager I would pack up my Ski-Doc Camera Mount and come visit but I do not know how to predict when you will get your one day of real summer.

@OB I would rather have one with out an iPhone mount and bring my own camera. The last thing I need to have happen is some crazy handle pop, slack line, or incompetent boat crew wreck my phone
  • BraceMakerBraceMaker Posts: 4,647 Mega Baller
@MattP - my phone is cheaper than my cameras. That said one of those WiFi equipped cameras and set yourself up so you can pull the video down while the camera stays at the dock - would be slick.
  • MattPMattP Posts: 6,263 Mega Baller
@BraceMaker My FlipVideo would do the trick and will plug straight into my computer

@horton - it looks like if you increased the zoom, then the skier wouldn't be centered, did you try it with more zoom ?

I know nothing about camera's, but do they make a wide angle zoom type lense?
  • WaternutWaternut Posts: 1,511 Crazy Baller
That's way cheaper than a new Trakker mount. I bought my Trakker mount for about the same price but it's big and bulky and you have to rotate it out of the way to open the engine cover. Plus it takes a couple minutes to rig up so I rarely ever use it. If I could just plop it on the pylon, I'd be more inclined to be "that guy" who films himself.
  • HortonHorton Posts: 30,561 Administrator
@richarddoane with all these kinds of things like the trakker or the Ski-Doc camera mount you need to zoom out a little because it does not point exactly straight at the skier

I have a Trakker, and I think it does a slightly better job of damping from what is shown in Hortons video (or maybe I'm just smoother back to the handle than big bad John =) HOWEVER, the Ski-doc price on this is WAY lower, and best of all, it's a super easy setup. Since I have the same boat as my coach, I could take a Ski-doc mounted camera along on my coached sets too. Nice!

The only negative aspect, it looks like you would have to remove it, every time you shorten the rope.

@Ed_Johnson... You do. I just started to tinker on a home made version that has an open top. So far it's mostly done. iPad mounts to the backside (or it will soon). Will test soon. Hmmmm? I'll need a YouTube account to post wont I.

I made a homemade mount similar to ski dock design for my nautique, removed switch section, added mountain climbing sling to pylon with carabiner... Rope changes are fast, real fast, and allows to tighten up interface with mount for better centering (more zoom), used a rubber "joiner" between mount pad and pole for extra dampening, may have some pics and video around here somewhere....

Take off the 41 off section, put that on the pylon with a carabiner, wouldn't that solve the issue and leave the rope the correct length (till you get to 41 anyway - not an issue for me personally...)? BTW I have a homemade version probably similar to what @alex38 has (thanks @davemac) I'll be trying out with the new Kodak Zx5 I bought myself for a Xmas gift as soon as the weather breaks. Building plans used to be available here somewhere, pretty simple and inexpensive to build. Anyone have a copy of the building plans for the homemade pylon mount?

The Ski-Doc Camera Mount pops off with a flick of the wrist. It is one more thing to do but is is not a problem.

Ski dock design does look tight and simple, may get one and tweak it a little, @ed obermeier yes that works too with 41 section, I originally used switch section at other end of rope but like the mountain climbing sling a little better

The only reason I'm fiddling with building one is for the iPad. That's a bit heavier, clumsy and top heavy to just slide up and off unlike a small cam. Especially if its just the driver. Having an instant, large(ish) screen for replay I think would be an advantage. With 1080p on them with a zoom app I think may work well on the recording end. As for play back, that's a no brainier. And there's an app that allows for slowing down the film (all the way to fram by frame) or speeding it up with a slide of the finger. It's just to easy.

@wish any worries about the handle hitting it?
  • MattPMattP Posts: 6,263 Mega Baller
@alex38 my thoughts exactly. @Wish defer to my earlier posting.

I use a Kodak zx5 myself and friends pop on whatever they have: go pros, point and shoot cameras with video too,

there is a plate (thin cutting board material) thats 1/2" larger then iPad. iPad mounts to this plate (which is between iPad and the rope, pylon and shock tube (yep can use shock tube). Small hole for iPad camera eye to look through. So no...no worries.

@wish sounds complicated and a PITA. Just my opinion.

@EdObermeier, @alex38, I use the 39.5 loop @ the Pylon with Carbiner too. Very quick and allows the change to happen closer to the driver without fighting the tightened rope around the Pylon. So, it's also much easier on those who cannot reach around & change out as easily. (Rotator cuff injuries, etc...)

Not sure about the PlaySport ZX5 though. Mine did not like the Trakker for sure. Seemed to cause a very Bad picture vibration (worse then Hortons above vid.) and then freeze ups... Bud @All6 said he has witnessed Trakker prob's using the ZX5 as well. (maybe the ZX5's will work better on other mounts)

I just (this wk.) bought a ZX3 off of Ebay to try out. And I bought one of the Ez Cam mounts as well. We shall see...
